Where does India’s Electricity come from?

Coal-fired 2600 MW power station at Ramagundam

According to government figures, India can generate up to 228,721 MWs of electricity, what is known as installed capacity. The actual production may be lower. Well over half of that capacity exists in in the Northern and Western regions. Most of it is produced from coal, of course, but hydro and renewable sources make up nearly 30%. Nuclear energy adds very little to the mix. State governments own the most capacity, followed by private entities and finally the central government. The chart below breaks the figures down by state, producer type and source.

Move the mouse over the chart to see actual values. Click on the map on the right to select a state, or click on the white space around the map to select India as a whole. Clicking on the legend adds or removes that data from the chart.

  1. Very well presented and extremely user friendly. It is surprising that still nuclear energy is not a significant part of the power production.

  2. would be interesting to see how states perform on non conventional energy. In Maharashtra the Mahadiscom insists that all private non conventional energy generation and purchase be routed through them and levy wheeling charges. This is apparently done to enable Mahadiscom achieve its target for non conventional energy. Argument of the Chairman of the board is that he has to achieve various generation targets and profit target as well. with rampant theft ( in addition to irrational subsidised power to farmers etc) he is unable to meet all his targets. So he cheats on the non conventional energy generation target by this subterfuge. All this is heresay.

Would therefore be interesting to know how states perform on non conventional energy generation
